May was Lyme Disease Awareness month but I believe we should be aware of the potential danger every month,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. There are 14 species of ticks in Nova Scotia with the majority requiring microscopic examination of their mouth parts to determine the species.
In June 2010 Dan Davis of the Department of Natural Resources said "Pictou County is not an established area for black-legged ticks." In August 2010 Dr. Maureen Blaikie, deputy chief medical officer for health in Nova Scotia, and others were at a press conference at the Aberdeen announcing that black-legged ticks known to carry Lyme disease were in Pictou County. The ticks have been here far longer than people realize!
The black-legged tick that carries the Lyme bacteria (Borrelia) are most active from late March to the end of June and early October to mid-December but can be found anytime depending on environmental conditions. This year the ticks are particularly bad with all the wet weather,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The Department of Natural Resources in Pictou County has been having at least one or two ticks submitted each day with the majority coming back as black-legged ticks which are then sent on to Winnipeg by the Health Department for testing. I am sure this is only a small sampling of the true number people are finding as many still do not know that DNR and the Health Department have a surveillance program for ticks in the province,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Education is the key to protecting oneself.
How can you protect yourself against something you know nothing about?
When outdoors in potential tick-infested areas wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirt and pants so ticks are more visible,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as socks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], enclosed shoes and a hat. Tuck your pants into your socks for increased protection. An insect repellent can help. The ticks are very small so check your clothes and skin for ticks after being in the outdoors and be sure to check your children.
Keep grass cut and brush cleaned up on your property to help minimize tick habitat.
If you find a tick attached do not apply anything to the tick but carefully remove it with a tick removal device or tweezers. Grasp the tick's head and mouth parts as close to the skin as possible and pull up slowly until the tick is removed. Do not twist or squeeze the tick as you could be injecting bacteria into the bite site,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Do not touch the tick with your bare hands or crush the tick as contact with fluids from an infected tick can cause infection. Be sure to disinfect the bite site and wash your hands if possible.
If you have a tick bite and a bulls-eye rash you have Lyme. Only about 30 per cent of people bitten will develop a rash. Other early signs can include headache,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fatigue, stiff neck and shifting joint pain. The testing in Canada is poor and was originally meant for surveillance only. Lyme disease is a clinical diagnosis. Many Nova Scotians are suffering fight not only Lyme but also a medical system that for the most part ignores them!

American Association of Blood Banks identify tick born illness high risk for blood transmission in US and Canada, many blood banks in US and Europe screen patients . Last time i checked , I am screened for lots of things at the blood bank. but not Lyme, I can walk in and give blood. ( I wouldn't give my blood to my own family!) ( or my organs for that matter!) Haven't we learned enough from HIV and Hepatitis mistakes?

How many more families have to suffer?
Our Health officials should Check out Dr Brian T Schmidt report on Lyme in BC, very telling. Once it was accessed through freedom of information the BC Government with in 24 hours pledged 2 million for clinical research study on Lyme and other chronic diseases. When reading it just take out BC and replace it with NS,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the political and medical issues are the same, except . At least BC say they are starting to do something about Lyme Disease and those who are suffering.
Isn't it time both sides of this debate came together for the benefit of the people that are sick with this disease,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
