In our everyday lives we see retro-reflective tape on a regular basis. Not only is it gaining popularity in leisure and sports fashion but it's been used for used in safety garments to reduce hazards and accidents in professional work environments. Aside from garment protection, reflect tape is also used in industrial environments on [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] equipment, on vehicles, on roadways, signage and more. We know that reflective tape shoots light back at the source, but [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] how does it work to keep people visible and safe?
An Example of Retro-Reflective [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Tape in Action
A great way to describe how the stuff works is with [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] a scenario - two [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] people are on opposites sides of a street. At the end of the street is a worker with a professional safety vest covered in reflective tape. The person on the right side of the street, using a flashlight, shines it down on the worker. Even in regular light conditions the vest will reflect the light back to the source, but the flash of light will only be visible to the one with the flashlight.
Generally the person on the other side of the road doesn't see the flash because their line of sight isn't in the return path or the angle of the light being reflected back. If the person on the left side of the road were to shine their own light however, they would see that light return to them. This works because the tape is covered in either glass beads or small prisms that return the light to its source, even if there are multiple sources of light.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Reflective Tape Design
In most cases, reflective tape is designed with microscopic glass beads of various size. The tape itself is made up of multiple layers. The upper most layer of the tape contains these small beads within an adhesive containing a metallic flake pigment. Between the lowest adhesive layer and backing [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and those glass beads are multiple transparent layers that contain pigment, color film, metallic flake pigment and a moldable cushion layer.
The amazing function of reflective [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] tape is that [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the design allows it to bend or refract light in a way that that it will always go out the same way it comes into the reflective material. Because of the unique design, the tape does not have to be in line [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] with the light source. Not only can it reflect the light back at sharp angles but it can shine numerous beams back to their sources in a variety of directions.
Understanding Angles
With any kind of reflective tape, no matter the design, the light is always shot back to the source. At a longer distance, the human eye can pickup the reflection as long as it is somewhat in line with the light source. As you get closer however, the angles become sharper. In order to see [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the light reflected from a flashlight if [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] you're within just a few feet for example, you would need to raise the light source closer to the eyes.
