The officer was on routine patrol just before midnight July 30, driving a marked police van in Queen's Park near the Centennial Lodge, when a man and woman flagged him down and told him that there was a man by the picnic tables crying hysterically.
As the officer approached the man,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he could hear bawling. When the officer was about eight metres from the covered picnic area,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the man ran at him and punched him in the abdomen. At one point, he punched the man in the face and may have broken his nose.
When the officer got on top of his attacker, he realized the man had a knife and backed off.
The suspect ran, and the officer was unable to catch him. A search of the area using officers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dogs and a helicopter did not find the suspect.
Later, the officer realized that he'd been stabbed in the abdomen. His ballistic vest had been pierced but it had prevented any injury.
"Had he not been wearing this, this might have ended up to be extremely deadly for our officer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said acting Sgt. Bruce Carrie.
The constable, who is 26 years old and has about five years of service,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was also slashed in the face, causing a cut that required stitches. He has returned to work.
The suspect is black, 24 to 30 years old, sixfootfour and 250 pounds, with a muscular build. His hair is shaved on the sides with a part or cut on the right side of his head.
